Where to Stay Near Mactan-Cebu Airport: Your First or Last Night in Cebu

Most trips to the Visayas start and end at Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Long-haul flights from Europe, connections from Manila, onward flights to Dumaguete, Bohol or Siquijor: sooner or later, you land on Mactan. And very often, the timing is awkward. You arrive late at night after a long journey, or your flight leaves at 6 a.m. That's when the right place to sleep makes a real difference.

Why Stay on Mactan Instead of Cebu City?

The airport is on Mactan Island, in Lapu-Lapu City. Cebu City is on the main island, connected by three bridges: the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the newer CCLEX Bridge. On paper the distance is short, but traffic between the two islands can be heavy, especially at rush hour or when it rains.

If you only need a bed for one night before or after a flight, crossing the bridges twice simply costs you time and nerves. Staying on Mactan means:

  • a short ride from the airport, even after a long flight
  • less risk of missing an early flight because of traffic
  • beaches, resorts and island-hopping tours right around the corner if you have a spare day

Airport Hotel or Condo?

There are hotels close to the airport, and for a few hours of sleep they do the job. But if you're staying a night or two, or travelling as a couple or a small family, a furnished condo often gives you more for the same money: a separate bedroom, a kitchen for a simple breakfast, a balcony, and the building's pool and gym.

When you choose a condo near the airport, these points matter most:

  • Distance to the airport: 20 minutes or less is ideal.
  • Self check-in: If your flight lands at midnight, you don't want to wait for someone with a key.
  • Backup power: Brownouts happen in the Philippines. A building generator means your aircon and WiFi keep running.
  • Fast WiFi: For checking in online, video calls home, or a day of remote work.
  • Quiet: After a long flight, a high floor away from the street noise is worth a lot.

Our Pick: Top-Floor 1BR at Royal Oceancrest Mactan

Bedroom with queen bed and sliding glass doors to the kitchen and dining area – top-floor 1BR at Royal Oceancrest MactanOne place that ticks all these boxes is a
top-floor 1-bedroom condo at Royal Oceancrest
in Lapu-Lapu City, which we co-host together with its owner. It's about 15 to 20 minutes from the airport, has self check-in with a smart lock, 300 Mbps fiber WiFi and a building generator.

From the private balcony you look out over the city and the pool, and from the 360° rooftop deck you can see Mactan, Cebu City and the CCLEX Bridge. It's especially beautiful at sunset. Guests can use the pool, gym and play area, and a supermarket, a 7-Eleven and plenty of local food spots are just around the corner. The unit sleeps up to four guests, with a queen bed in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the living area.

Getting From the Airport to Your Accommodation

Both terminals have Grab pick-up points and taxi queues. A few tips:

  • Grab: Set your pick-up point to the right terminal (Terminal 1 for domestic flights, Terminal 2 for international) and confirm your location with the driver in the app chat. Prices go up when it rains or late at night.
  • White taxis are metered and usually the cheapest option. Make sure the meter is on before you leave.
  • Yellow airport taxis cost more, but the queue is often shorter.
  • Have some small peso bills ready, as drivers often can't change large notes.

To Royal Oceancrest, a Grab or taxi usually costs around ₱250 to ₱450. If you'd rather be met at arrivals after a long flight, the owner can arrange a private pick-up on request.

Shopping and Everyday Needs Nearby

Lapu-Lapu CityOne big plus of staying in Basak, the part of Lapu-Lapu City where Royal Oceancrest is located: everything you need is close by.

  • Robinsons Easymart Basak is a small supermarket on the same road, just a few minutes' walk away and open from early morning until late evening. Perfect for water, snacks and breakfast.
  • Gaisano Grand Mall Mactan, about 800 metres away, has a large supermarket, a department store, a pharmacy, ATMs, a money changer and plenty of fast food.
  • Island Central Mactan, a short ride away, is a bigger, more modern mall for shopping and dining.
  • City Times Square is a newer shopping centre with restaurants, cafés and a Korean barbecue place.
  • Pueblo Verde is the best spot for shopping: The Outlets sell well-known brands at discounted prices, and there are lots of restaurants around. Right next to it is the newer Gaisano Grand Plaza.
  • Mactan Town Center has a supermarket, clinics, cafés and fast food.

Got a Spare Day on Mactan?

If your schedule allows, don't just sleep and leave. Mactan has plenty to offer within a short ride:
Beach on Mactan Island, Cebu

  • Mactan Shrine: The monument to Lapu-Lapu, who defeated Magellan's men here in 1521, stands in a seaside park with mangroves. Entrance is free, and it's a good piece of Philippine history.
  • Beach day pass: You don't have to book a resort to enjoy the beach. Several resorts within about 12 to 20 minutes of Royal Oceancrest sell day passes, often with lunch or a food credit included: Plantation Bay with its huge lagoons, Costabella with its wide sandy beach, Bluewater Maribago, Tambuli Seaside and The Reef Island Resort with its ocean infinity pools. Mactan Newtown Beach is another option. Ideal if your flight leaves in the evening. Rates change, so check with the resort before you go.
  • Solea Mactan Resort and Waterpark in neighbouring Cordova is a favourite with families.
  • Island hopping and diving: Boat tours leave from Mactan to the small islands nearby, and Mactan is one of the best-known diving spots around Cebu.

Continuing to Dumaguete?

Many travellers land in Cebu and continue south to Dumaguete, our home base on Negros Oriental. A night on Mactan makes that easier: you arrive rested and catch your connecting flight or bus the next morning without stress. This matters even more if you're travelling overland: the ferries between Cebu and Negros don't run at night. As a rule of thumb, the first boats leave around 6 AM and the last ones around 8 PM, so if you land in the evening, you'd likely miss the last ferry anyway. Check the current schedule before you travel. If you're thinking about spending more time in Dumaguete, or even living there, have a look at our guides and FAQ.
